First time i met him was in the mid 80’s at a Sunday open jam on Yonge St. (Toronto) across from the Gasworks, called the Upper Lip. (it was hosted by David Bacha) I was on stage doing a couple of standards with other local musicians when in the door walks Chris Bouchard (then with Platinum Artists – one the premier local booking agents) with a regular looking guy (who was obviously vision-impaired) as Chris leads him the stage in between numbers. He was introduced to us on stage as “Jeff” & a chair was placed beside me. As we exchanged pleasantries to discuss songs, we break into the original JJ Cale version of “Cocaine”. i was floored by his talent!! What seemed like only a couple of minutes of trading off solos (I’m sure we turned it into at least a 20 minute rendition), I knew this guy was going to be BIG!! As time passed, I ran into Jeff at other functions, I knew he didn’t remember me, but was always gracious regardless. He always remained grounded despite his successes. I just finished a one-night gig in Ottawa when I heard the news of his passing. So young, so tragic. That day, the world had not only lost a remarkable musician, but also a tremendous human being who has left an unforgettable legacy. I truly wish the best for Cristie & the kids as Jeff’s spirit will always live on.
